Rethinking Resolutions - New Year, New Approach

Hello 2026 !

Let's welcome the new year on a fresh sheet of paper.  Many of us step into 2026 with many ambitions, resolutions and targets for the new year. The new year beginnings are always a good time to pause, sit down and speak to your inner self on what you wish to achieve over the 365 days.

But has it always been the same resolution way of settings and sometimes not nearing what you aim for? Maybe rethinking the way you set resolutions might bring some changes.

What to Carry Forward, and What to Leave Behind?

Reflection and looking back is a tool of not looking at weakness, but looking at what you have and have not achieved. Every year leaves us with lessons. Some deserve to be carried forward. Others need to be released.

Honestly ask and rethink. What are the habits that have supported you? What mindsets hindered your next move?

Progress begins when we keep what strengthens us and let go of what no longer serves us.

Simple Goal settings and carry it through with 5-4-3-2-1

To carry through your resolutions. Try this method of 5-4-3-2-1 to achieve productivity in bringing your resolutions to fruition. It's a simple action and simple framework that categorizes your daily to-do list into five levels of focus and purpose.

Small actionable habits will bring you to achieving what you aimed for. So, with this mechanism of 5-4-3-2-1, you can organize your days into specific categories

5 Priority tasks (biggest goals)

4 Supportive tasks (contribute to projects)

3 Routine tasks (emails, admin)

2 Personal tasks (well-being, growth)

1 Stretch task (new skill, challenge).

On the other hand you can utilize the 5-4-3-2-1 in setting your big resolutions goals. Break down long-term visions into actionable timeframes.

5 Months: Your ultimate yearly vision.

4 Weeks: Major monthly milestones

3 Days: Mid-level goals.

2 Days: Tasks for tomorrow/day after.

1 Hour: Immediate starting actions

Bring along ‘One Word’ for your throughout the year

I am sure a lot of people set long resolutions for the new year. Some list out 10 - 20 sets of resolutions. Honestly ask yourself, have you carried it through diligently? If you are not one of those that are good at keeping track, try adopting this.

Maybe a resolution list is not what works for you. Maybe simplification works best for you. Instead of a long list of resolutions, choose one word to guide your year. It can be 'Consistency'. 'Growth'. 'Discipline'. 'Balance'. 'Courage', 'Bravery' and many more.

If your goal is to build a business, then your word should be ‘Courage’. If your goal is to lose weight, then your word should be ‘Discipline’. If you goal is to learn to spend more time with your family, then your word should be ‘Balance’

Let the chosen word be the compass for your every decision, actions, habits, and your direction in 2026, replacing the resolutions list and let this one word drive your every action. Remember, Small actions, aligned daily, create lasting impact.

Coupled with the strength of the ‘One Word’ you hold on to, together with the 5-4-3-2-1 framework, you might never know it will carry you far in 2026.

Lets enter the new year lighter, wiser, and more focused. Jump start your new year right, wishing you a great new beginning, shared success, and an exciting road ahead. As we look ahead to a brilliant year, let’s carry forward the memories, lessons, and momentum into an even greater 2026.

Have a good 2026 !
